United 93 debut

Highest film critics’ rating of 2006 and top box office per theatre

CONSENSUS: “Potent and sobering, this film about the doomed airplane and her passengers is made even more gut-wrenching because the outcome is already known.”

“Playing in 1,795 theaters, about half as many as “RV,” “United 93″ averaged a solid $6,462 a cinema, the best results among the top-10 movies.” **

“A emotional and powerful film that I will remember forever. I can’t fault anyone who doesn’t want to see this film. But please put to rest any fears that this film was made purely to turn a profit and serves no purpose. For all those who were afraid that this film would be exploitive, propaganda filled Hollywood schlock, I’m sorry to say that could not be farther from the truth.”

My wife and I saw United 93, Friday night. Those forty angels fought to save their own lives and to see their families again. Any of us could have been on those planes or in those buildings. When the screen went black and the credits rolled, I thought of our troops and of what they will not leave to chance. Then I saw thousands of “antiwar” protestors marching in Manhattan yesterday and wondered what they will do when evil returns to finish the job.

Rush Limbaugh ‘Not Guilty’

Friday, Mark read the following statement released by Rush Limbaugh’s attorney, Roy Black.

Settlement Agreement Ends State Investigation of Rush Limbaugh

Palm Beach, FL – April 28, 2006 – In response to media and other inquiries, Roy Black, Rush Limbaugh’s attorney, released the following statement today concerning a settlement agreement with the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office to end the investigation of Mr. Limbaugh:

“I am pleased to announce that the State Attorney’s Office and Mr. Limbaugh have reached an agreement whereby a single count charge of doctor shopping filed today by the State Attorney will be dismissed in 18 months. As a primary condition of the dismissal, Mr. Limbaugh must continue to seek treatment from the doctor he has seen for the past two and one half years. This is the same doctor under whose care Mr. Limbaugh has remained free of his addiction without relapse.

“Mr. Limbaugh and I have maintained from the start that there was no doctor shopping, and we continue to hold this position. Accordingly, we filed today with the Court a plea of ‘Not Guilty’ to the charge filed by the State.

“As part of this agreement, Mr. Limbaugh also has agreed to make a $30,000 payment to the State of Florida to defray the public cost of the investigation. The agreement also provides that he must refrain from violating the law during this 18 months, must pay $30 per month for the cost of “supervision” and comply with other similar provisions of the agreement.

“Mr. Limbaugh had intended to remain in treatment. Thus, we believe the outcome for him personally will be much as if he had fought the charge and won.”

The actions taken today are as follows:

  • The State Attorney has filed a single charge of doctor shopping with the Court. The charge is being held in abeyance under the terms of an agreement between the State and Mr. Limbaugh.

  • Mr. Limbaugh has filed a plea of “Not Guilty” with the Court.

The formal agreement between Mr. Limbaugh and the State Attorney will be filed with the Court on Monday. The terms of the agreement are substantively as follows:

  • Mr. Limbaugh will continue in treatment with the doctor he has seen for the past two and one half years.

  • After Mr. Limbaugh completes an additional 18 months of treatment, the State Attorney has agreed to drop the charge.

  • Mr. Limbaugh has agreed to make a $30,000 payment to the State of Florida to defray the public cost of the investigation.

40 flags and angels at Flight 93 memorial

Thursday, Mark played the trailer from the movie United 93, which will be released tomorrow. Then Mark read an article by David Beamer, whose son Todd Beamer uttered the famous words, “Let’s Roll”, to begin the resistance by passengers saving many lives on the ground on 9/11.

A Flight 93 father’s report

“…Often we attend movies to escape reality and fantasize a bit. In this case and at this time, it is appropriate to get a dose of reality about this war and the real enemy we face. It is not too soon for this story to be told, seen and heard. But it is too soon for us to become complacent. It is too soon for us to think of this war in only national terms. We need to be mindful that this enemy, who made those holes in our landscape and caused the deaths of some 3,000 of our fellow free people, has a vision to personally kill or convert each and every one of us. This film reminds us that this war is personal. This enemy is on a fanatical mission to take away our lives and liberty — the liberty that has been secured for us by those whose names are on those walls in Battery Park and so many other walls and stones throughout this nation. This enemy seeks to take away the free will that our Creator has endowed in us. Patrick Henry got it right some 231 years ago. Living without liberty is not living at all.” — David Beamer, father of Todd Beamer of Flight 93, writing in the Wall Street Journal, after seeing the premier of United 93, at the Tribeca Film Festival, this past Tuesday night.

Press Secretary Levin

Tuesday, Mark gave us a little taste of what it would be like if the president hired him to be the White House Press Secretary.

Mark Levin (opening his show, Tuesday, April 25, 2006): All this talk about press secretaries. You know, maybe I could be the press secretary to the President. Oh, yes, yes. I’ve got some thoughts on how to proceed here. Let’s give it a try, shall we?

Press Secretary Mark Levin: Yes sir, you have a question:

WH press corps member #1: Americans are going to listen what the President had to say today, they’re going to digest his four-point plan, and the first question’s going to be, that’s fine, what does it mean dollars and cents to me in the near term, this summer when they gas up to go on vacation? So can you give us any indication as to what this will [sic] translates to, in rough dollars and sense?

ML: Yes. This four-point plan you talk about is actually a five-point point plan. That’s right, my four points and that point on your head. Sit down you big dummy!

Jane, Plain and Clear

Jane, Plain and Clear
By Mark R. Levin

As I said in a recent post, the Democrats have their talking points. And the Washington Post is more than happy to give them voice in its pages. Indeed, like Menendez and Kerry,
Jane Harman repeats her lines like a well-trained parrot.

Key Democratic legislators yesterday joined Republicans in saying they do not condone the alleged leaking of classified information that led to last week’s firing of a veteran CIA officer. But they questioned whether a double standard exists that lets the White House give reporters secretly declassified information for political purposes.

“I don’t know this woman and I do not condone leaks of classified information,” said Rep. Jane Harman (Calif.), ranking Democrat on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, referring to the firing of Mary McCarthy.

Harman added that “while leaks are wrong, I think it is totally wrong for our president in secret to selectively declassify certain information and empower people in his White House to leak it to favored reporters so that they can discredit political enemies,” she said on Fox News Sunday.

Harman was referring to White House staff members disclosing the classified identity of CIA case officer Valerie Plame in 2003.

More here.

So, while the Democrats certainly don’t condone Mary McCarthy’s leaks (of course not) – indeed, they don’t even know the full extent of the Kerry donor’s leaks – it’s all Bush’s fault.

These cold, calculated comments, which are dismissive of an egregious act of betrayal committed against our country, are a new low even for these 1960s retreads. It also makes you wonder if McCarthy has been a source of information not only to the media, but to members of Congress.

They want to call it an “Innovative Ad Takes a Unique Look at the President’s Illegal Domestic Spying Program and Feingold’s Censure Resolution”

This is a quote from the press release:

“The President has broken the law by authorizing an illegal domestic surveillance program that wiretaps Americans, on American soil, without a warrant as required by law - He must be held accountable,” Feingold said. “Censuring the President is an appropriate step in the process of accountability. The “W” ad puts this issue in a unique perspective and I hope people around the country will take a look and forward the link to their friends. The President must stop playing fast and loose with our constitution. It’s time for him to return to the law.”

Who is Mary McCarthy?

Who is Mary McCarthy?
By Mark R. Levin

Well, as of this morning (Saturday) most of the big media don’t care. They’re fixated with the weather and gas prices — and anything else that will divert the public’s attention from the stunning revelation that a Sandy Berger crony has apparently been leaking top-secret information from her high post at the CIA. The media will continue to downplay this story as they cover-up their own role in exposing our nation’s secrets, including the supposed existence of CIA prisons in Europe. She’ll be called a “whistleblower” and praised as some kind of patriot (a patriot, in the eyes of the media, is anybody who undermines this administration and the war effort by leaking national security secrets to them). They will downplay that McCarthy was a Clintonoid who somehow managed to land a top post at the CIA, ultimately winding up in the CIA’s Inspector General’s Office, from where she could monitor CIA internal investigations of, well, leaks, among other things.

I’m with Walter Williams
By Mark R. Levin

In principle, the solution to people being in our country illegally is simple. No one in the country illegally should be eligible to receive any social services except emergency medical services. Efforts should be made to deport illegal aliens. Our borders should be made secure both against illegal entry of persons and potential threats to national security. … U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services procedures for obtaining work permits and citizenship should be streamlined so that law-abiding people around the world can more easily contribute to and enjoy America’s greatness.

Thinking Through the Immigration Debate

Thinking Through the Immigration Debate
By Mark R. Levin

I have a couple of questions for the open-borders crowd. Do you agree that we should stop each and every person before they enter our country to determine whether they are terrorists, criminals, or suffer an illness dangerous to the general public? If you agree, how do you propose to do this? I know, a “guest-worker” program where we “regularize” immigration — people will just get in line, present their documents, pay their taxes, pay a fine, and so forth, right? And who will manage this program? The same Homeland Security Department that’s criticized for failing to respond well to Katrina, and is currently failing to secure the borders. And why is it assumed that people would want to follow any new requirements, no matter how minimal, when they can practically be assured of amnesty the next time the politicians in Washington address this issue? Indeed, by then, the illegal-immigrant community and their advocates will have even more clout with these politicians. Why is it assumed that businesses, which today demand illegal labor, won’t continue to demand cheap labor, skirt a guest-worker program, and evade taxes and regulations in order to keep down the price of lettuce (or whatever)? And if we are unwilling to apprehend, detain, and deport law-breakers (whether some percentage of the 11 million illegals now here, or all newcomers?), then isn’t this all a farce anyway?

Harry Reid is pathetic

Harry Reid is pathetic
By Mark R. Levin

As I pointed out below, he gave a rambling statement on the Senate floor yesterday in which he tried to distance himself from his 1993 immigration bill — claiming he dropped it a few weeks after introducing the bill. Yet, as I point out below, on September 20, 1993, Reid gave a strong speech against illegal immigration and for his bill. And the Washington Times reports today that many months after Reid claimed to have dropped the bill, Reid reintroduced his bill and pressed for its passage. The Washington Times reports, in part:

Harry Reid claims that his 1993 immigration bill was the biggest mistake he’s ever made. That he realized it soon after he introduced his bill, after speaking to his wife. And yet, 5-6 weeks later, he made a long, impassioned speech on the Senate floor reiterating exactly what he had offered and said on August 5, 1993. Does this sound like a man who know almost immediately after he introduced his legislation that it was a mistake? The full transcript is below:

Why The Clintons Belong in Prison

Folks, FrontPage Magazine is featuring an interview with Melrose Larry Green, the author of the book Why The Clintons Belong in Prison. In an excerpt from the interview, Mr. Green states:

I think the Clintons have terribly hurt this country, by eliminating basic standards of morality to millions of American youth, and by leaving America vulnerable to the Al Qaeda and the attacks of 9-11. The Clintons despised the military and the police. Under Bill Clinton, terrorism was treated as a criminal matter, just like the pursuit of a bank robber. Clinton cared more about the civil rights of terrorists than the security of the American people. The Clinton Administration was soft on terrorism - under Clinton’s watch the World Trade Center was hit the first time (in 1993), the Khobar Towers, the U.S.S. Cole was bombed, 2 embassies in Africa were bombed - and Bill Clinton did virtually nothing. Furthermore, Bill Clinton had several opportunities to take out Osama Bin Laden, and he blew it. See Richard Miniter’s book “Losing Bin Laden” for all the details.

Oh, the memories

Oh, the memories.
By Mark R. Levin

United Press International, August 26, 1993:

[Janet] Reno said last week the administration is studying ways to deal with the problem of its sieve-like southern border, and that illegal immigrants made up 26 percent of the federal prison population.

Housing and Urban Development Secretary Henry Cisneros said earlier this week he does not favor Wilson’s constitutional amendment [preventing the children of illegal immigrants from getting citizenship].

But Cisneros said he agrees with first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton: Illegal immigrants should not be included in any universal health care mandated by President Clinton’s health care reform package.

And Sen. Diane Feinstein, D-Calif., also is warning about the danger of too many illegal immigrants. She said the United States can no longer afford to be the ‘’welfare system'’ for Mexico’s poor.

Some ten million illegal immigrants later, the Democrat Party has reversed course. And hardly anyone has noticed.

DeLay

DeLay
By Mark R. Levin

Tom DeLay is going to resign from Congress and drop his re-election bid.

I admire Tom. Despite the media speculation, the Abramoff charges have never had anything to do with him. And Ronnie Earle’s shameless abuse of power inflicted the political and personal damage Earle had intended.

Answering Gillespie

Answering Gillespie
By Mark R. Levin

Ed Gillespie, a long-time and highly regarded Republican activist and lobbyist, had an op-ed this weekend on opinionjournal.com.

Unfortunately, it repeats many of the arguments we’ve been hearing from the open-borders crowd. This is a good occasion to address it point-by-point.

Mark presents the “I’m Not a Political Genius But I Play One on TV Award”

Last Thursday, Mark was at the Media Research Center’s DisHonors Awards dinner, roasting the Most Outrageously Biased Liberal Reporters of 2005. Mark had the honor of presenting the “I’m Not a Geopolitical Genius But I Play One on TV Award.” Click on the following link and scroll to the bottom to watch Mark present the award.

I’m Not a Political Genius But I Play One on TV Award

They sure picked the right person to present that award, didn’t they? I thought Alec Baldwin should have won, though! LOL!

No Judicial Borders

No Judicial Borders
By Mark R. Levin

And in case you’re wondering, the Supreme Court is playing a prominent role in watering down citizenship. From my book, Men In Black via the Center for Immigration Studies.

Of course, certain open-borders Republicans, who claim opposition to judicial activism, will undoubtedly applaud it in this instance.

Stay and pay or go away…

…is my immigration reform proposal

Today on FoxNews’ Weekend Live, Brian Wilson asked this question of the day: Will a crackdown on immigration affect your life?

Here is my answer.

By allusion or directly, we keep hearing from politicians that we cannot stop the flow. Yet we all know our borders can be secured, our employment laws can be fully enforced, and the primary reason why those things are not happening is the Congress and our President are refusing to do what the overwhelming majority of American citizens want in this regard.

If any of the current legislative proposals become law, our borders will not be fully protected and amnesty, in some form, will be foolishly provided to millions who have not earned it. None of the current proposals provide anywhere near the necessary personnel, equipment, or funding to secure our borders and process the multitudes who potentially could apply for this “road to citizenship.” Every Member of Congress knows if the actual enormous costs to implement the latter program were known by the electorate, they would demand that they end all the political rhetoric and secure our nation first.

Here is my ‘stay and pay or go away’ legislative proposal: (more…)
