by Mark Levin on Sunday, January 29, 2012 at 2:57pm

(Re-posted from Facebook)

I am beginning to think that the nature and level of attacks being launched by Mitt Romney against Newt Gingrich, which he would surely use against any conservative threatening his nomination, are going to make it very difficult for Romney to unite the different factions of the GOP and the conservative movement behind his candidacy should he win the nomination. While I have said that I would vote for Rick Santorum, I am appalled at the “anything goes” assault on Gingrich. See NYT article here.

Romney is not a conservative in the traditional sense, and he has a record of big-government Republicanism. Even many years after the success of the Reagan administration, he sought to distance himself from Reagan and the GOP, self-identifying as a progressive and independent. Thus, he resorts to spending multi-millions of dollars trashing his opponents, rather than providing thoughtful arguments on conservatism and constitutionalism. Lest we forget, it was Gingrich who was trying to run a positive campaign and who offered to debate Romney one-on-one, asking Romney to stop with the millions in unanswered ads attacking him. Romney declined. I have no doubt that Romney would do the same thing to Santorum if Santorum was rising in the polls, albeit on different issues.

I have said that Romney is in many ways Richard Nixon, and that Romney would not successfully lead efforts to repeal Obamacare but, in fact, would grow the federal government in many respects. Romney’s advisor, former senator Norm Coleman, has now said as much. That is Romney’s record. Despite having been a businessman, he was not a defender of free market capitalism while governor. Romneycare is, as Santorum pointed out, a top-down government health care system with an individual mandate that is breaking Massachusetts’ treasury and destroying private health insurance. It is a disaster. Romney also backed cap-and-trade and TARP (as did Gingrich).

My great fear is, however, that he is the weakest candidate who can face Obama and will go into the general election with a fractured base, thanks to his own character flaws, which are now on display, and his tactics of personal destruction. Moreover, while Romney can swamp his Republican opponents by 3 to 1 or more in every state with his spending advantage, Barack Obama will be raising more and spending more to beat him in the general election, meaning Romney’s financial advantage will be non-existent.

We better start paying a lot more attention to holding the House of Representatives and winning the Senate with a bunch of solid conservatives. I have spent a year on my radio show identifying and interviewing these candidates, and will continue to do so.

The crowd was definitely reduced due to the weather, but those that made the trip were well rewarded with smile and handshake from Mark Levin. Folks – if our early patriots could survive Valley Forge and the march on Trenton, you can make it to a book signing. And if you truly cannot make it, it is important to let future generations know that you made the effort to save this great nation through other means. Blogs, writing, websites, postings, rallies, and getting others to understand our challenges and then vote accordingly…it ALL matters. You can be one of the solutions and we need millions of you.

In an interview with CNSNews.com about his new book—“Ameritopia: The Unmaking of America”—Mark R. Levin said he believes America has already largely become “a post-constitutional country.”

The book, released Monday, compares the Utopian and unworkable schemes laid out by political philosophers from Plato to Thomas Hobbes with the vision of natural law, God-given rights, and individual liberty that inspired the Founding Fathers when they wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

“Utopianism is not new,” Levin writes in “Ameritopia.” “It has been repackaged countless times—since Plato and before. It is as old as tyranny itself. In democracies, its practitioners legislate without end. In America, law is piled upon law in contravention and contradiction of the governing law—the Constitution.”

Levin’s verdict: Barack Obama and modern American liberals are firmly in the Utopian camp—pursuing a vision fundamentally at odds with limited government and human freedom.

It comes as no surprise that Jon Huntsman has suspended his campaign for presidency. After garnering two whole delegates in NH, reviewing the polls in SC and beyond, he wisely opted to pull the plug. Those of us out in the real world (i.e. outside the Beltway) saw this guy as a pretender early on.

Pretender isn’t exactly the right word…placeholder or tool might be more appropriate. Why? Numerous reasons. As a former member of President Obama’s diplomatic core to our largest trading partner, you wonder where Huntsman’s loyalties lie. He was promoted heavily by the inside the Beltway types, which reeks of ‘inside job – inside promotion’. He was indistinguishable from Mitt Romney, period. It also makes you wonder how NH voters could choose Huntsman – unless it was an anti-Romney moderate vote. Doubtful though, given that 51% of his voters are satisfied with Obama. My gut says it is the start of anti-Romney, designed in ‘DChicago’ movement…which I’m probably way early on. Rush Limbaugh mentioned Geraldo heralding the imminent demise of Huntsman Sunday evening. You would only have to hear Geraldo today on his WABC radio program to understand where this was all put together. I can almost hear the trap snapping shut as voters are herded in the direction of Romney…and then…wait for it…the OWS movement hits it’s stride in an anti-corporatist, anti-capitalist frenzy later this year.

Huntsman was put in to pull the race to the left, directing people and then releasing delegates to the establishment Romney. All the faux conservative pundits will now spew their ‘well, now it is all Romney’ and ‘coalesce behind Romney’ talking points over the next five days leading up to the SC vote. I hope South Carolinian’s realize they are being played for fools by forces far larger than just the GOP establishment. Take a look at the delegate count and get behind the guy who is the true anti-establishment candidate, Rick Santorum.

So now Mitt Romney represents capitalism, despite his support of TARP, which was the biggest bailout of major corporations in American history and the worst example of crony capitalism. It cost us hundreds of billions of dollars. Now, I disagree with the attacks on Romney based on his Bain Capital activities. But I would ask whether those who are upset with the attacks on Romney as anti-capitalist are equally upset about TARP, which was even worse — using our tax dollars to subsidize failed corporations. And will these same people, mostly establishment mouthpieces, be supporting Rick Santorum, who opposed TARP and opposes the attacks on Romney respecting Bain Capital? I doubt it. I just wish Romney and his super-pac had not spent millions trashing Newt Gingrich in South Carolina, when Newt had committed to running a positive campaign. It is Romney who took this primary campaign in this direction, tearing down any candidate who appears to be gaining traction. And it troubles me a great deal. This is how someone campaigns when they don’t want their own political record and views to be fully vetted.
