Obama Rewrites the Cold War: Liz Cheney

In this morning’s Wall Street Journal, Liz Cheney writes a rebuttal to the remarks made last week in Moscow by President Barack Obama:

The basis of the Cold War was not “competition in astrophysics and athletics.” It was a global battle between tyranny and freedom. The Soviet “sphere of influence” was delineated by walls and barbed wire and tanks and secret police to prevent people from escaping. America was an unmatched force for good in the world during the Cold War. The Soviets were not. The Cold War ended not because the Soviets decided it should but because they were no match for the forces of freedom and the commitment of free nations to defend liberty and defeat Communism.

As one among millions who fought the Cold War as an American soldier and saw the Berlin Wall ripped down during my seventh year (third tour) of duty in Germany, it was particularly grating to learn from President Obama that our service had little to nothing to do with liberating Eastern Europe. He and others would learn a lot of the real history of America’s contribution to that victory by visiting the Cold War Museum.

    Sgt Tim,

Barack Obama has no intention of learning anything from the Cold War Museum. If anything he expects the World, including Americans, to buy into his revised version of World history. If competition made them change it certainly wasn’t of the athletic variety. They collapsed under Reaganomics, which advanced capitalism to such an extent that Soviet styled Statism could neither compete or survive. Obama is not the only one of his kind that refuses to credit Reagan; in fact I know of no liberal who believes that the USSR didn’t change under their own volition and that they would have done so even if Jimmy Carter were President. Two communist parents and a lifetime of friends and associates, including Frank Marshall Davis, who believe in a yet to be perfected communist nirvana are about as likely to gain anything from the Cold war Museum as Ahmadinejad is likely to gain something from the Holocaust Museum.

Of course the military, of which you are a proud member, exemplified how capitalism could fund the best and so outdistance the Soviets that they could never catch up even if they all starved to death to maintain their own.
