Huckabee’s Deplorable Campaigning

Mark Levin, on the Corner:

Mike Huckabee: “Many of us who have been Republicans out of conviction … the social conservatives,” he told reporters, “were welcomed in the party as long as we sort of kept our place, but Lord help us if we ever stood forward and said we would actually like to lead the party.” More here.

Huckabee continues to use his faith as a weapon against those who question not his faith, but his political populism — much of which he shares with secular progressives. And he is clearly hoping to stir up resentment among Evangelical Christians against the other elements of the conservative movement and Republican Party as a way of encouraging them to vote in the caucuses and primaries. This is a tactic right out of Saul Alinsky’s playbook. Of course he wants us to believe the Reagan coalition is dead because he cannot win with it intact. But he cannot win either the nomination or presidency with the narrow focus of his appeal. This is why I find Mike Huckabee’s tactics and candidacy so deplorable.

    Huck is a schmuck!

Huckabee did not invent the Christian left but he certainly made the rest of us aware of them. They may know right from wrong but they haven’t figured out left from right.

Great analysis by The Great One-not that that’s any surprise. Former preacher or not, Huckabee is the proverbial Trojan horse. Hiding inside are the Stalinists who would pull his strings just as they did in Arkansas. Keep in mind that he was elevated to the governorship because the guy between Clinton and him (Jim Guy Tucker) resigned following a felony conviction. Could Huck have won in ’98 had he not had incumbency-in the state Gore lost two years later? Huckabee IS Gore in some respects. He’s gotten where he is today for two reasons, IMHO…he’s fooled a lot of people, and he’s had an obscene amount of luck. When push comes to shove, however, that won’t be enough. The spam word is fitting for him. ;)

Unfortunately populism over shadows logic. Too often I have seen people buy a breed of dog based upon a few qualities that they read about and not consider all the other reasons why such a breed does not make sense for them. How often do people marry for attraction without paying attention to compatibility? The reason they do this is because the effects are not immediate and they can often continue to fool themselves for a long time; they also want to fool themselves. On the other hand if a women designs and/or buys a house it will often be exactly to her liking in amenities and neighborhood; likewise for a guy who buys a sports automobile. The issues they are concerned about are immediately perceived and most importantly they are immediately experienced. People who vote for Huckabee or McCain think that they know what they want. They do not realize how much that they will get that they really did not anticipate. What you superficially wish for, should it become reality, you sometimes discover that you neither needed nor wanted. It reminds me of the old adage about boat ownership that says: “the two best days of your life is the day you get it and the day you get rid of it”. So goes human nature. Sometimes logic and reason are your weakest tools.

The watering down of conservatism is not limited to Huckabee – Newt (and Michael Steele, head of GOPAC and former Maryland Lt. Governor) headlined a fund raiser for liberal Republican Wayne Gilchrest, who is being challenged by a true conservative. Gilchrest has voted along with Nancy Pelosi more than any other Republican – check out this quote from his campaign:
Lynn Caligiuri, Mr. Gilchrest’s finance director, also said the rush to the right in GOP primary “seems crazy to me.”
“The whole tide is going away from the conservative movement” following large Congressional gains for the Democrats in 2006, she said.
Newt needs to be called onto the carpet for this – I contacted both Rush and Hannity, hoping that they would pick up on this.

2006 gains happened because the Republican Party left the conservative base and failed to articulate and practice conservatism for many years. They should exemplify conservatism to liberals and for the people. It should not be the other way around. Do not ask who the bell tolls for because it tolls for us and some among us are doing the tolling.

  8. I originally came in here to ask an even tougher question than the thought I am about to run down on you.

First got to say didn’t catch the debate. (Don’t get a whole lot of TV you know.) But I generally like Mr. Huckabee. Now if the other candidates didn’t want their faith in the arena they shouldn’t have brought. (See if you can figure that one out.)

I thought this was a conservative site, now I don’t you all understand what is at stake. If you are in that crowd that says ‘Oh I worship the LORD in my own way’ you are deceiving yourselves. Which brings me to my original point …appropos since I am The Original Dreamer (you like that? I did):

Where is Alan Keyes? Why isn’t he being talked about? I heard he was ‘invited’ to the debate. What? Is he tooo conservative? Well that’s impossible! You either ARE conservative or YOU ARE NOT.

So what is it going to be folks? Is this a conservative site, or what???

  9. MLF says:

theoriginaldreamer, it is obvious that you don’t know what you are talking about and have no idea what Conservatism is. You seem to be under the assumption that since Huckabee is an evangelical Christian, that makes him a Conservative. Well, he claims to be pro-life. I’ll give him that. But, everything else about him is liberal. There is an enormous amount of evidence available to prove that, but somehow I don’t think you are interested.

  10. Well I can’t say I agree with everything about. That would be impossible. He would be a clone of me. This world doesn’t need two of me.

Pro life, anti-(I can already tell you don’t want me to use the only I can for what it seems to be a lot of new englanders, new yorkers, & san franciscoers so I won’t). That says a lot to me. If we (that’s you and me) can get those squared away in this country we will be on the right track.

But then you didn’t answer the question on Mr. Keyes. Or are you scared to? I don’t think I have ever heard him utter a word that I disagree with. And that includes almost 20 years ago when we also ran.

That was the most standpoint to the message. Where is the conservatism? AND why no one including you talks about a conservative when you see one.

  11. MLF says:

I do talk about a conservative when I see one. Fred Dalton Thompson!

I used to like Alan Keyes when he was running for president back in 2000. However, his Senate Campaign in 2004 was very troublesome. Take a look at this page and read the part about that.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Keyes

Besides making a number of gaffs in that campaign, he also came across as bitter & angry, something that voters did not like. Also, in my opinion, although he has some good ideas in many areas, he comes across as a single-issue candidate. He brings all arguments back to the pro-life/pro-abortion issue. I agree with his position, but don’t think he will win any elections if that’s all he talks about.

  12. task says:

Alan Keyes has some very sound and logical reasoning and is very consistent with the Constitution. The problem is that unless you were pro-life from the moment of your own conception Keyes considers you a political dead man walking. There are no candidates that fill that slot so perfectly. If you were 98% conservative but had a wrinkle in your pro-life stance, somewhere in your past, Keyes would not support you even if the other side nominated the anti-Christ. To that extent he has lost credibility and in the process has degraded himself and the considerable amount of talent that he has. It is actually a shame to see a man, who understands and articulates the issues rather accurately and flamboyantly, almost reduced to a kook status when you realize that he actually does it to himself. I like the guy but for this election it would be political suicide.

  13. 1oneshot says:

I’m not voting for a pastor,Mormon or anyone but a President who is capable of defending this Nations policies

  14. HankWilliams4th says:

1shot, is RELIGIOUS bigotry alive and well, on both sides of the fence (LIBERAL & CONSERVATIVE)?

The Presidency of the United States of America is called the EXECUTIVE BRANCH (the other two, as you know, the JUDICIARY, & THE LEGISLATIVE).

The Mormon you talked about is a moderate Conservative who believes in National Security, is pro-Life(although he had to learn the hard way!), has been a governor, has been a SUCCESSFUL PRIVATE SECTOR EXECUTIVE – formed a successful company, and created jobs, and employed US citizens.

Does the candidate you have in mind have this EXECUTIVE QUALIFICATION, who is a Conservative, whose philosophy on economics is predicated upon – TAX CUTS(let US citizens decide how they want to spend their hard earned income), the free market capitalist system, takes the war on terror to the Islamofascists, pro-life, anti-illegal immigration (and pro-legal immigration)? SUCH A CANDIDATE IS MORE THAN CAPABLE OF DEFENDING THE POLICIES OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

So name your candidate that meets all the above Conservative qualities. Of course, if you are of the LIBERAL vision (which spells the end of civilizations), the above would be Greek to you. Spell it out, please.

  15. HankWilliams4th says:

theoriginaldreamer, can you please articulate to us what you understand about Conservatism, and the rationale behind it, particularly in the context of the founding of America, its Constitution, Bill of Rights etc? In your own words, please. Not talking points from anyone, not even Mark Levin.

  16. DrWhoFan65 says:

Hank, I’m pretty sure that what 1oneshot was saying was that he isn’t going to be voting for a religion-whatever it may be-but for whichever candidate is most capable of protecting the homeland.

  17. task says:

Personally I really am not concerned about the religious affiliation of any nominee. The Country was founded upon religious tolerance and the free expression of religion and culminated in a governing document that ensures such. The President has Constitutional obligations and restrictions. His role is specified and limited. Dittos for the other branches. Anyone who professes that they understand that tells me that he will work to assume his authorized obligations to allow the people to prosper with minimalist governmental interference… a small, tight lean government on a short leash that governs least. We, free people in a free land are the best hope to insure future happiness for ourselves and our posterity and in doing so all the World will benefit. Without us, because there is no other Founding Document like ours, to keep the powerful and corrupt from undermining the free and industrious, the road that leads to the maximal potential of mankind’s quest for prosperity and happiness will be hazardous and difficult.

For one short period in history, the enigma of government was elucidated and understood in England, Scotland and Ireland where once the powerful and the rich suppressed the free enterprise of men. Locke, Hume and Burke devised philosophies for the interactions of free people so as to maintain their perpetual freedom and allow for the maximization of their ingenuity and personal industry. They influenced our Founding Fathers to create our Founding Documents and Governing Documents.

There have been many, especially on the left, who suspect that man cannot be allowed to govern himself and have sought to modify and even abolish our Constitution and establish a benevolent collectivist utopia replacement based on the perceived good for all. To that end I could lavishly explore the tyranny that could only be our destiny should such events transpire. Let me just say that every day that I live I take a moment to meditate and reaffirm how lucky I am to be born and raised in America.

The greatest threat we face is educational lethargy and misrepresentation concerning the genesis of our Country. John Adams stated that “this Republic will survive based upon the education of its’ Constituents”. And therein lies the rub, for without education many false prophets will emerge and fool many and in so doing enable the likes of John McCain and Huckabee to assume a mantle of governance using authority they neither understand nor love and thereby diminish the liberty and freedom we are granted by God and Nature and protected by the very Constitutional Document they will undermine.
