The family of Navy SEAL Lt. Michael P. Murphy, of Long Island, NY, will be presented the U.S. Navy Congressional Medal of Honor, on October 22, 2007. His parents, Daniel and Maureen, said this yesterday, after the White House made the announcement:
Only one of the 4-man SEAL team survived the battle in Afghanistan against more than 100 Taliban. In part, he described Lt. Murphy’s final actions this way:
“…there were still so many of them, and then they got into better position and shot Mikey Murphy through the chest… then Lieutenant Murphy walked out into the open ground. He walked until he was more or less in the center, gunfire all around… the risk, understanding the danger, in the full knowledge the phone call could cost him his life, Lieutenant Michael Patrick Murphy, son of Maureen, fiancé of the beautiful Heather, walked out into the firestorm…” — Marcus Luttrell, writing in Lone Survivor
Mark began his show tonight talking about the real peace makers, our brave military, intelligence agents, and law enforcement personnel. Folks like Michael Murphy are America, the peace makers:
Marcus Luttrell is traveling yet he still managed to get through to Mark:
More after the jump yet please, take a few minutes to leave a comment on Lt. Michael Murphy’s Legacy.com page.
Update 10/13/2007: “Murphy was found July 4, quickly recognized by his muddy FDNY T-shirt.”
Update II: From today’s New York Post editorial entitled Unfit to Print?:
Every major daily paper in New York took note of President Bush’s decision to bestow the first Medal of Honor of Operation Enduring Freedom on Navy SEAL Lt. Michael Murphy — a Long Islander who gave his life for his country and his fellow SEALs. Every paper but one, that is. And it shouldn’t be particularly hard to guess which one. By now, most folks know exactly how much The New York Times despises the U.S. military. How it detests any mission that involves U.S. troops — whether to protect Americans by killing terrorists or to help stave off a bloodbath in the Middle East. How the paper works tirelessly to promote its anti-war, anti-military agenda — even in its supposedly objective news pages.
So while Bush’s announcement merited stories and appreciative editorials in The Post, The New York Sun, the Daily News and even the front page of liberal Newsday, it shouldn’t be all that surprising that the Times didn’t publish a single word about Murphy’s well-deserved honor.
What did the paper of record focus on yesterday? No fewer than three stories reported on how Americans had killed innocent Iraqi civilians.
The New York Daily News ran a two-part series on Lt. Murphy back in April. This is an excerpt from part 2:
On June 28, 2005, the four-man field team, in camouflage and scruffy beards, encountered a pair of Afghan goatherds, one of them a young boy. Their lives and the classified mission to find Ismail were now at risk. Murphy decided to let them go, rather than kill or capture them. Military sources said it was not clear that the goatherds intentionally alerted anyone to the SEALs’ presence, but two hours later Taliban militiamen headed toward their position.
A running firefight began as the Taliban attacked from three sides. The SEALs leapfrogged backward down the steep slope, covering each other as they moved. For about 30 minutes, the four men fought on, as ammunition ran low, according to military officials. Three SEALs were wounded by gunfire or rocket-propelled grenades. One screamed, “I’m hit!” Murphy yelled back, “We’re all hit! Keep moving!”
Forty-five minutes into the harrowing battle, Murphy decided to radio for a quick-reaction force to get the team off the mountain. He crept into the open to get a clear signal. “Troops in contact!” Murphy radioed, according to a source who heard the transmission. Murphy was bleeding from severe wounds in his arm and stomach, but still firing his M-4 rifle at the enemy and exhorting his men to escape while he held off their attackers.
…
Two Chinook helicopters raced to save the team. One, carrying eight SEALs and eight Army Special Forces troops, was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade and crashed, killing all 16 aboard. With the deaths of Murphy, Dietz and Axelson, it was the worst loss of life [in a single action in the history of U.S. Navy SEALS] for the elite Navy commando group. It took several days to recover the bodies of the team. Murphy was found July 4, quickly recognized by his muddy FDNY T-shirt.The fourth member of Murphy’s team, Petty Officer Marcus Luttrell, was slammed by a rocket-propelled grenade but managed to crawl through the mountains for four days, until he was found by a local shepherd who bandaged his wounds and gave him sanctuary. He was later rescued by U.S. forces.
…
When he called for the helicopter he was already severely wounded, more bullets whizzed toward him and still Murphy kept his cool to give the coordinates of his position. And at the end of the transmission, ever the officer and gentleman, he said, “Thank you.”
Having made contact, Lt. Murphy knew help would be coming as fast as humanly possible. He knew because that is what our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines do, they keep faith with each other and come running. Michael Murphy exposed himself to enemy fire so that others might live. Read part 1 and perhaps you will have a better understanding of where such men come from.
Here at home, we to must also keep the faith by supporting our troops and never forgetting the cost of freedom.

It must be noted that while the New York Daily News, New York Post, New York Sun, and even liberal Newsday (out of Long Island) all ran articles and editorials today, the despicable New York Times ran no article. Instead, they linked to the AP’s brief article yesterday afternoon.
The sad thing is we have men like this and other that lay down there lives to watch over andtake care of their own and us. Yet if everyone in Congress had to have a pair like these MEN do we wouldnt have the issues to deal with that we and they do today! How dare you sad sorry bunch hide behind the courage of real men. I only pray you have to feel the price of your inaction and pandering.

It’s a sad statement when even the Kansas City “Scar” runs a story that the New Yorks Slimes will not. If it were not for men Lt. Michael P. Murphy the Slimes would not be able to be the English version of Pravda that it is.
Now that the excrement is out of the way, let’s get down to business. I heard a song today while I was working on other things that pretty well sums things up. Lt. Michael P. Murphy was most certainly a Point of Light. ‘Nuff said!
Point of Light by Randy Travis
There’s a point when you cannot walk away
There’s a darkness that everyone must face
There are heroes whose names we never hear
When you have to stand up straight and tall and mean the words you say
It wants to take what’s good and fair and lay it all to waste
A dedicated army of quiet volunteers
There’s a point you must decide just to do it ’cause it’s right
And that darkness covers everything in sight
Reaching out to feed the hungry reaching out to save the land
That’s when you become a point of light
Until it meets a single point of light
Reaching out to their fellow men.
All it takes is a point of light a ray of hope in the darkest night.
If you see what’s wrong and you try to make it right you will be a point of light.
There are dreamers who are making dreams come true
Taking time to teach the children there’s nothing they can’t do.
Giving shelter to the homeless giving hope to those without.
Isn’t that what this land’s all about.
One by one form the mountains to the sea points of light
Are calling out to you and me
All it takes is a point of light a ray of hope in the darkest night.
If you see what’s wrong and you try to make it right
You will be a point of light.
Intimidator, you got half of our Country right. The other half wants to make sure that they create people that need food, clothing, housing and of course medical care. And they want to be the ones that we dependently need to trust and request our allowance from.
I heard this story about Navy SEAL Michael Murphy’s selfless leadership. It is a very moving account of what America’s sons and daughters have always done in its proud, young history.
In today’s Liberal, twisted world, traditional patriotism is the object of disdain – it will offend foreigners! Hence, Liberals (and their socialist ilk) HATE and despise the military. The difffrence between Conservatives and Liberals is this – while Conservatives proudly wear their core values on their chest, Liberals hide behind “slogans”, cliches, quirky terms (Progressives) – Liberals rarely identify themselves as Liberals!
This is the meaning of America – the valor and patriotism of NAVY SEAL MICHAEL MURPHY. May we never forget!
Wow! Amen, my brethren! Right on! Thanks!
