Wednesday, Mark spoke with former Governor of Massachusetts and current candidate for president, Mitt Romney.

He’s one of the top contenders for the job. What do you think, folks?

Romney used this opportunity in a generic way. He had a canned boilerplate response designed to appeal to the right and yet limit damage from the MSM and his own party’s critique. He doesn’t spend each day listening to this show and he as much as admitted that in his answer to Mark’s initial question. He has other people do it for him. That said he may not have made any new converts but he also made no new enemies. Romney is someone who needs to be both listened to and watched simultaneously. His demeanor is part of his attraction and actually changes the significance of what he says.

I have yet to see a candidate echo the same vociferous conservative sentiments of ML or his listeners and that includes myself. We are committed dedicated Conservatives. And we are knowledgeable.

I was not impressed with his understanding that $5,000 is a requirement for illegals under the current bill. It is not; it is a requirement for citizenship only. It is not a requirement to remain in this country legally with access to all benefits, other than voting, provided you apply for legalization and survive the 24 hr. investigation.

Romney is harder on McCain in real time than he was here on the show. He also is harder on the present immigration bill than he was on the show.

I believe that his record on immigration is consistent with his rhetoric. He empowered MA State troopers to enforce immigration laws, he denied in-state tuition for illegal immigrants, and he worked hard to require that all immigrants learn English. He also opposed efforts to give illegals driver’s licenses. That is more than I can say for Giuliani who I am still uncomfortable with in regards to his historical performance on immigration and his still unclear present rhetoric.

I speak to many people and even though I always knew that all Americans, Republicans and Democrats, are united in their dissatisfaction with this bill I am amazed at the extent of these feelings. Liberals are as upset as Conservatives and they blame Bush. I point out that if the last elections were different we wouldn’t be having these discussions because a lot of good Republican Senators were voted out who would never have allowed this bill to be entertained. The Senators that should have been voted out, along with most Democrats, are the ones contributing to this bill’s architecture. As low as the President’s approval is it will drop even further should this bill survive. Now he will lose his base. It may even compromise his war effort.

Romney, and any other Republican will have to run on a platform that is actually anti-Bush when it comes to immigration and the size of government and associated spending. So far Romney is on track. All Republican candidates will support the war with fierce determination.

This past Memorial Day really galvanized my feelings about this present crop of immigrants. These immigrants are about American jobs, not about American history, culture and values. We are dealing with a tsunami of immigrants that really constitutes an invasion that by its very size mitigates cultural integration into the American culture. It is hard enough, with liberals running the educational system, for our homegrown American youth to understand our founding fathers’ concept of government. All of them were Conservative. In fact they even refused to provide any financial relief to destitute French Huguenots because that was neither a Government function nor a proper use of the money they were entrusted with.

We are on our way to becoming Balkanized. As such crime will prosper, social services will be overrun, hospitals will continue to close, and education will further deteriorate. We cannot afford this. Those who complain about our inability to provide SS, Medicare and Medicaid are the very people who are about to finish these services off by directly overloading and under funding them. All other things being equal this is about what the 08 elections are really about provided there is anything that can be fixable after the legislature permanently breaks it. When illegals are made legal how can we reverse that? It seems we only reverse treaties, obligations and promises with our friends and allies without any pangs of conscience.

When Thompson makes his move I will be listening very closely. He has to make his move and he must be clear on all positions (hopefully very conservative) and he has to be dynamic.

What Mr.Levin does night after night is so informative. I appreciate Mitt Romney a little more by hearing him thru this forum, but there was nothing that stood out.

*nudge..nudge* :) I hear Mr.Thompson is setting up house in July! Better late than never.

  7. DubInDallas says:

Right on, my brethren! Amen! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Romney/Thompson is shaping up to be my “dream ticket”! I will be a happy American on the Fourth Of July if this suicide pact does not make it to President Bush’s desk, and if Fred Thompson makes his announcement that he is officially in the running! Here’s hoping!

  8. I’m sorry folks, but Flip Romney, Flip Flomney, or whatever his name is, just doesn’t do it for me.

I’d support him if he won the nomination, but you might as well be wearing a 7th cavalary uniform and heading toward the Litte Big Horn.

    That’s how confident I would be…

  9. DubInDallas says:

If Mitt Romney can win the Massachusetts gubernatorial race as a Reagan Republican, then I have confidence that this is an electable politician nationally! It reminds me of Ronald Reagan winning California against Governor Brown. When Reagan won THAT by a million votes, THEN the nation saw that he could win anywhere!

  10. JFKDEMFAN says:

AHHH GEEZE!! I can’t take it ANYMORE!! I heard this interview 2.5 times and I couldn’t finish it. The “sweetness” is giving me a cavity!!

Romney, you’re fine to look at. I personally wouldn’t mind seeing you on my tube for 4 years but, my concern is that the terrorists are gonna have a FIELD day with you!!

What the heck is all this “imagine”, “fearful”, “fair”..etc..etc.. lingo about?? This dialog is too sanitized!! Like TANCREDO said, we need our enemies to “FEAR” us, not be seduced with such charming language. SHEESH!!

You perhaps have the strategy of slapping your enemies with a white glove. Well, that may work with some, but with the terrorists, UN & ilk, we need a frickin’ “SLEDGE HAMMER” approach. I wanna hear some b(e)lls (a)!!

OK, I’m calm now. Here’s what really bothers me:

1.- You claim you have not studied the capacity of Homeland Security regarding the time basis of this agency and the burden in thinking how to put together an immigration program that works?? WHY NOT??? Go ask TANCREDO!!! He’s got the figures for you!!

2.- You say you want to engage an outside agency such as Visa/MC/Amex to assist in implementig this program??? OH YEAH???? The same companies that grant illegals credit?????? What are you thinking??

3.- Rector from the Heritage Foundation has been giving us the statistics on our local conservative radio station for a long time now the figures of $2.5 trillion and you say you “HOPE” that the #’s are near a realistic # and “IF” it is real, you “HOPE” they don’t accrue to the people of this country?? Is that all you can give us, HOPE??

4.- You say you don’t want to be critical of those who came here illegally because of the amnesty we’ve given in the past. This sounds to me like a “BLAME AMERICA FIRST” excuse.

5.- You talk about the “Employment verification program??” What about an “Employment ENFORCEMENT program??”

OK, so TANCREDO doesn’t have the money, TANCREDO doesn’t have the needed votes, TANCREDO doesn’t look or sound as Presidential as you do, .but TANCREDO has the FACTS on the financial burden, National Security issues and the proper “LINGO” when it comes to calling it like it is!!!!! Illegal immigration is a CRIME!!! PERIOD!!!!

Can you say firmly law-breakers Mr.Romney???? Can you firmly say drug cartels Mr. Romney???? Can you firmly say diseases Mr. Romney?? Can you firmly say “RE-CONQUISTA” Mr. Romney??? Sugar-coating crimes aren’t gonna make terrorists & anarchists AFRAID & much less RESPECT us. They’re just gonna ridicule you and mistake “decency” for “weakness”. Now THAT’S SCARRY!!

“*nudge..nudge* I hear Mr.Thompson is setting up house in July! Better late than never.”

He’s setting up in June and is supposed to announce… or not… in July. I don’t think it’s going to matter at this point whether he annouces or not. I got a feeling he’s going to be a contender as a write-in candidate, :-) .

  12. task says:

Demofan. You are truly a dedicated and very hard working member of this site and my hat goes off to you for your clear understanding regarding these very serious immigration issues.

If this bill becomes law then all the enforcement negatives that you mentioned become reality. Hopefully, and I mean that with the greatest of caution, it will not. I don’t believe that any candidate, or for that matter any of the Senators supporting this bill, have even thought about what you would want Mr. Romney to talk about. Those questions should be used for the next debate for all the candidates, from both Parties. If they honestly answered them today they would find themselves trapped in a defenseless recommendation of a bill whose provisions they don’t have a clue about in regards as to how they can accomplish the back-ended enforcement. Many on the Democratic side don’t even care and many on the Republican side are afraid to even think. That is exactly why this bill is so terribly wrong.

Romney may look like a sanitized hopeful but no Republican President will be soft on the war. Count on the main battle being with the left and their cacophonic allies in the MSM. Reagan was a good-looking actor but the world soon learned that there would be consequences for their actions. In fact the legislature feared him as well. You don’t need a Quasimodo countenance to emanate decisiveness.

I don’t think that Romney is blaming America. We all know that when ICE is lax on law enforcement and when State and local authorities are equally DELIBERATLY lax the word gets around. When we have sanctuary cities and when the former NY mayor states that “if you are and illegal NYC is the place for you” it encourages illegal entry. When the border is wide and open and when Governors like Arnold provide universal State child health care it further encourages illegal entry. In fact when Saddam Hussein suggested that Kuwait should be part of Iraq and one of our officials gave a weak response he concluded, albeit erroneously, that invasion was permissible. When the head of the Senate suggests that the war is lost it encourages stepping up suicide car bombings and the increased use of IED’s

If we could pick our next President without compromise from an unlimited field ML would cease to be a talk show host because he would soon be in the White House. For that matter Rush Limbaugh would have several Nobel Peace Prizes.

I watched Romney use MA State Troopers to go after illegals in cooperation with Federal Immigration enforcement. He did not have to do that in 2002-2003 in a blue State. I also saw Giuliani encourage NYC to be a sanctuary City. This from a Federal Prosecutor? That astounded me then and still does now.

Ask yourself if Rudy had become the NY Senator instead of Hillary if he would vote differently than her on this amnesty bill? Do you feel comfortable with your answer? Ask the same about Romney. Can you understand the difference?

Romney knows that the McCain/Feingold Bill was an abomination. It is designed to restrict political speech that is the most sacrosanct of all speech. It is about on par with the diabolical Fairness Doctrine. Unfortunately Fred Thompson supported and voted for the McCain/Feingold Bill. Possibly he felt, as did our President, that the Supreme Court would declare it to be unconstitutional. That is not how you make law. Obviously a Court that that was capable of creating the Kelo decision is the wrong place to seek refuge. I would bet that Fred retrospectively wished that he never voted that way.

Romney has changed his tune on several issues. So have I, so have many others and so have you as is evidenced by your name. That is because we think about things and are not afraid to change our minds when we honestly come to an alternative conclusion that we know is the right choice. I wish our President could do the same. Romney’s greatest weakness will primarily be his Mormon faith and secondarily his competition with a superstar like Giuliani. On the other hand Giuliani has a lot of negatives, like his association with Kerik, that the left is deliberately not talking about with the hope of Swift Boating him later perchance he wins the candidacy.

We are looking for a Conservative and someone that can beat Hillary. I think we can achieve both.

  13. Steph says:

I just wish people would ask the tough questions about everything and everybody. I mean, think of it like this: If you are on a stand in court, do the lawyers pull punches then? They grill you and grill you until they are as clear on what you mean and what you have said as you are. Yet, the MSM and the people pollling ask almost nothing and seem quite satisfied with the most superficial answers to the tough questions.

Like Shrillary who says a lot of things about what’s to be done but doesn’t exactly elucidate upon how it’s to be accomplished. Same thing with Obama who now wants to jail us if we don’t buy his government sponsored health insurance. Romney is just another shill to me, as are McLame and Goobliani. He might look pretty but I think we’re all tired of the “pretty” faces. We need something substantial and that’s what we’re waiting for.

  14. task says:

It is very hard to look into the souls of these candidates. After all they are politicians…aren’t they?

  15. JFKDEMFAN says:

Task: Your posts have such philosophical depth that I’m starting to wonder if you are my beloved Dr. Levin incognito. You remind me of my partner who during a mediation kicks me under the table when I blast off my “emotional” side. I have plenty of old bruises on my ankle to prove it.

I guess I shudda given myself a “time out” before posting my last rant. Obviously it was immediately after having listened to the interview for the second (almost completed the third) time. I was writing down furiously the bullet points that didn’t sit right with me.

I guess I was putting myself in the place of the enemy, the UN..etc..etc if they had heard this “kind” reply to TGO’s questioning.

Oh well…..there’s alot of work to be done and I will give equal time to all the candidates Dr. Levin interviews in the future as well as the debates. I was a little dissapointed when Dr. Levin mentioned having interviewed conservative candidates such as Thompson but he didn’t mention his interview with TANCREDO. Minor oversight, but yet the truth.
