Those who knew Savage years ago are shocked by his metamorphosis, from 1960s author and proponent of herbal medicine, to 1970s hanger-on in the North Beach Beat poets crowd, to the right-wing talk-show host they hear today.
…. Savage, whose legal name is Michael Weiner, was born in New York City in 1942 into a Russian immigrant family … In 1964, Savage met his first wife, Carol Ely … Ely, an advertising copy writer who lives in Florida, says she underwent two abortions during their marriage. …
By 1967, after Ely and Savage had separated, Savage met his second wife, Janet. She followed him to Hawaii, where he earned master’s degrees in anthropology and botany at the University of Hawaii. He and Janet have two children.
Savage built a career as a nutritionist and herbalist. In his 1980 book “Weiner’s Herbal: The Guide to Herb Medicine,†he praised the “remarkable†medicinal benefits of marijuana.
He now attacks advocates of medicinal marijuana and rails against drug use.
While in Hawaii, he offered to produce readings by poets Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, leaders of the Beat Generation. In a letter in the Ginsberg papers at Stanford University, Savage explained that he would like others “to hear and see and know why I adore your public image.†He signed one letter “Love (archaic), Michael Weiner.â€ÂÂ
Both writers took him up on his offer, participating in a reading there in 1972 … Savage, now blasted by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation for his hateful rhetoric, did not shy from highlighting his association with Ginsburg, the openly gay poet.
Stephen Schwartz, a senior policy analyst at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies in Washington, D.C., and North Beach regular in the ’70s, recalls that Savage “seemed like a BS artist, a person who wanted attention and wanted to be taken very seriously.â€ÂÂ
Others remember him then as opinionated, funny and devoted to his children, a man who was accepted by the same counterculture crowd he now disparages. “I really don’t understand the transformation of Michael Weiner into a Jew hater and a poet hater and a leftist hater,†says Ferlinghetti, co-founder of City Lights bookstore of San Francisco …
Whether Savage’s current right-wing positions are the product of some epiphany at midlife or just opportunistic showmanship is unclear.
Longtime friend and physicist Jack Sarfatti [says that] Michael’s just a smart Jewish kid from New York,†Sarfatti says. “He’s extremely funny much of the time. But he’s angry.
A lot of Jewish intellectuals are angry, so Michael has kind of channeled his anger into a high form of art.â€ÂÂ
But New York marketing consultant Alan Zaitz, a former friend who has known Savage for more than 50 years, is unsure how seriously the radio host takes his own message.

And Weiner has no way to recover! I predict that a lot of Mark Levin’s further penetration into the market will be at Weiner’s expense! Stations that now are carrying Weiner will opt to drop Weiner in favor of Mark Levin simply because it is better business for them to do so! And THAT is going to be sweet!
Long Island Pete: I disagree with you TOTALLY. It is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY that this blog support and cover Mark’s drive to EXPOSE this despicable imposter to the conservative talk radio audience.
Weiner is an abomination to every forward-thinking & optimistic instinct that defines the general conservative movement. The fact that he’s a long-standing core leftist hellbent on promoting “chaos” and “disaster” in order to advertise his phony schtick has nonetheless drawn the attention of enough mistaken listeners that he HAS to be shown for what he REALLY is. Otherwise, he & his “audience” could STILL do enough divisive damage to keep hard leftists voted into power for quite some time. And at THIS present time, that would be a disaster!
I realize the set-up: some guys, like Rush & Shawn, deliberately IGNORE his B.S. by not reacting to it, so as not to give him what he wants. Mark has PURPOSELY taken the baton to place Weiner in the proper perspective. And from my vantage point, it’s WORKING. I can’t TELL you how many people I’ve “educated” about this human toilet over the past two years…..and one of my biggest & BEST tools has been THIS site!

It is true that we know what the man is and about and can poke holes in his camouflage. His audience are not as fortunate. They need to be weaned from this Weiner.
Oh yeah there is one thing I forgot to mention about Weiner. Weiner is borderline racist with the immigration issue and he used Martin Luther King day to attack the holiday considering Reagan was the one who made Martin Luther King’s birthday a national holiday in the first place.

The fact of the matter is before my private conversation with MLF as to why he put all this Weiner crap up here, it was my feeling that MLF was giving Weiner unsolicited advertising and attention. I understand what you’re saying, LIP……but there’s a DIFFERENCE between the people who just think this A-hole is “passionate” and occasionally “flies off the handle by saying something stupid” and those (like us) who REALIZE that he’s a lying wanna-be. The PROBLEM (IMO), is that there’s STILL enough idiots who can’t figure this out and will do stupid crap at election time that will be just damaging enough to tilt important races to the far left (i.e. wasting votes on “independent” obscurities who have NO chance of doing anything except giving “freebies” to leftists…….or not voting at all because this creep has been able to “convince” them there’s “no difference” between, say, Jim Talent & Claire McCaskill).

Mark is the only newspaper I read besides Savage’s ,and I say newspaper of course because well… good talk radio can be the new paper,”get it?”.
Now I consider myself a bright and intelligent 41 year old African American man,and I don’t know why Mark does not like Savage. But I tell you what they are both fighting the exact same struggle as all of us saving America . One thing I respect about Savage is he’s not hating on Mark . By not bashing someone fighting the same struggle is a show, by example, of doing his part as an American ,to unite. Further I listen to these two guys like it’s a religion . They are both intellects with a sense of style who demonstrates true firey passion as well as compassion with no tolerance for nonsense and anti-Americanism.These two are doing more for America behind the scenes than anybody . Nobody owns them and they have no agenda, they stand for America and it’s culture and it’s values,and yes they are fair and balanced .
They are both geniuses there’s no politic’s in there passion about there message,and man do they know how to deliver. So they have different styles with similar beliefs ,but the values and goals are the same as well as there motivation’s. So Mark … lighten up on the Savage bashing it’s not right,because your both on the same team . It’s like two players on the same team fighting for the same rebound. You put too much energy into bashing Savage ,my god Mark,come on,think about it! there’s my passion . I consider myself a conservative independant.The two-party system is a failure because well they ‘re like two rival high school’s during spirit week, fighting for superiority of who has the spiritual dominance. I’m a true American. Fight for the middle class is a fight for America ,and Mark in your closing statement’s on the show give it up for the border patrol guy’s and everyone affiliated with them they do thankless work and boy do they have courage by protecting our front lines.
